Now based in LA and London, working as an Executive Vice President for the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation, the former Conservative Member of Parliament politician until May 2015, Mike Weatherley is an internationally renowned Intellectual Property (IP) expert and former IP Adviser to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron.
Mike is the former Chief Financial Controller for Peter Waterman of Stock, Aitken & Waterman and also a Chartered Accountant. Mike’s background prior to this was in businesses and manufacturing. As a part-owner of a company that exported goods across the world, Mike was pivotal in the success of the business and helping to secure two Queen’s Awards for Industry and Enterprise.
Before entering Parliament, Mike was the Vice President (Europe) for the Motion Picture Licencing Company (MPLC). Mike is film industry licencing expert and has used his extensive knowledge of creative industries in Parliament to support UK talent.
In the UK Parliament, Mike runs the most successful competition amongst MPs, Rock the House. Rock the House raises awareness of Intellectual Property with both young people and parliamentarians. Building on the success of Rock the House, Mike launched Film the House to help promote the important of IP with young film makers.
In September 2013 Mike was appointed as the Intellectual Property Adviser to the Prime Minister David Cameron. This is the first time in history that such a position has existed. Mike’s appointment was greatly received by industry and Mike continued in this role for just over a year.
During Mike’s time as the Prime Minister’s IP Adviser, Mike produced a number of well-received reports, namely: ‘Search Engines and Piracy’, ‘Follow the Money’, and ‘Copyright Education and Awareness’. Mike also helped secure additional funding for the national Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (PIPCU).
After stepping down as Prime Minister’s Intellectual Property Adviser, Mike received praise from the Prime Minister for his work and across Parliament from a broad range of Ministers and MPs.
