Mary is currently rapporteur on a report on prostitution in the European Parliament. Most trafficked persons are women trafficked for sexual exploitation. She sits on the Women’s Rights and Gender Equality committee, and is currently navigating a report on prostitution and sex trafficking through the European Parliament. The report advocates the Swedish Model of addressing prostitution, by which it is the buyer of sex who is criminalised.
She has been a member of the Culture and Education Committee since 2009. She contributed to securing important advances, including measures to tackle child safety online and steps to broaden employment and learning opportunities for Europe’s youth.
Following a degree from Oxford University, she joined the Greater London Council, before moving on to work within the trade union movement.
She has a long track record in London politics, having spent eight years on Barnet Borough Council as well as chairing the London Labour Party Women’s Committee. She was a founder member of the Labour Party National Policy Forum and spent three years as treasurer of Emily’s List, an organisation which helped women secure seats in Parliament.
